Protecting Workers During Heat: Prioritizing Safety and Wellbeing

As temperatures soar across the state and we prepare for the hot month of August, the Abernethy Bridge Construction Project has taken proactive measures to safeguard the workforce from the summer heat.

As temperatures soar across the state and we prepare for the hot month of August, the Abernethy Bridge Construction Project has taken proactive measures to safeguard our workforce from extreme heat that can arise. Recognizing the critical importance of protecting workers' health, we have implemented a range of strategies aimed at minimizing heat-related risks and ensuring optimal working conditions. Here are a few of those accommodations during extreme heat events:

1. Early Shifts to Beat the Heat

One of the most effective strategies being adopted is the adjustment of work schedules. Shifts are adjusted to start at 5am instead of the usual 7am. This adjustment allows workers to complete a portion of their tasks during cooler morning hours, reducing their exposure to extreme temperatures later in the day. Weather forecasts are also closely monitored to adjust the work environment accordingly and ensure workers are prepared for the conditions they will encounter during their workday.

2. Managing Work Hours Wisely

To further mitigate heat stress during extreme heat events, strict limits on shift durations have been implemented. Workers are restricted to no more than eight hours per shift, unless special authorization is granted. This measure helps prevent prolonged exposure to the heat, ensuring that employees remain healthy and alert throughout their workday.

3. Promoting Regular Breaks

Recognizing the need for more rest as temperatures rise, we provide workers with more frequent breaks. These breaks are crucial for workers to rest, rehydrate, and cool down from the intense heat.

4. Accessibility to Hydration

Staying hydrated is imperative in hot conditions. To support this, we are ensuring hydration stations are readily available to workers throughout their shifts. Stations equipped with ice and water allow workers to refill personal jugs and coolers as needed, promoting hydration and helping workers regulate their body temperature effectively. These are available all summer long, but especially highlighted during extreme heat.

5. Special Considerations for Specific Tasks

Certain tasks, such as welding, can generate additional heat and discomfort. To address this, we have limited the need for welding as much as possible during extreme weather events. When welding is necessary, we provide direct airflow with fans positioned near welders and other workers in high-heat areas. This measure helps reduce heat buildup and enhances comfort while performing critical tasks.

6.  Education and Training

Interested in learning more about how to prevent heat illness?  Online training and safety videos are available to anyone at State of Oregon Occupational Safety and Health: Heat Illness Prevention Online Courses. Also see the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool to download this tool which provides real-time heat index and hourly forecasts specific to your location so you can anticipate heat conditions when planning outdoor activities.

7. Conclusion

These are just a few ways we protect our workers during extreme heat. This commitment underscores the Abernethy Bridge Construction Project's dedication to prioritizing the safety and well-being of our workers and crews.

As temperatures continue to rise, these proactive measures will remain essential in safeguarding workers and maintaining optimal productivity in challenging weather conditions.
