Prioritizing Safety on the Worksite as Weather Changes

As we transition into fall, it’s crucial to maintain our focus on worksite safety for the Abernethy Bridge construction project. With changing weather conditions and more darkness approaching, new challenges can arise and our top priority at The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is the safety of both our employees and the traveling public.
To ensure safety on the Abernethy Bridge construction site, we take the following measures:
Securing Materials: All loose materials are anchored to prevent hazards from wind and rain.
De-Icing Supplies: We stage necessary de-icing materials in advance to keep walking and working surfaces safe.
Personal Protective Equipment: Crew members are provided with YakTrax (traction devices) to help prevent slips on icy surfaces.
Clear Signage: Loading and unloading signs mark restricted areas, reducing unauthorized access and enhancing safety.
Monthly Safety Meetings: On the first Monday of each month, we hold safety meetings covering essential practices and hands-on demonstrations.
Inclement Weather Hotline: Employees can call a hotline for the latest weather updates affecting the worksite.
These proactive steps help keep our team and the public safe during construction.
What you can do
As you travel through the area and are on the roadways, we encourage you to take the following steps to keep yourself and others safe:
Minimize Distractions: Stay focused while driving by avoiding phone use and other distractions that could take your attention away from the road.
Check Weather and Traffic Conditions: Before you hit the road, take a moment to check the weather and traffic conditions on TripCheck. Planning your route in advance can help you avoid potential hazards.
Ensure Proper Functioning of Lights: Make sure your headlights and taillights are on and in good working order, especially as daylight hours decrease.
Check Windshield Wipers: Ensure that your windshield wipers are functioning properly. Clear visibility is critical for safe driving in rainy or foggy conditions.
Inspect Tires: Regularly check that your tires have adequate tread and are properly inflated. Well-maintained tires can significantly enhance your vehicle’s grip on wet surfaces.
Maintain Safe Following Distance: Increase your following distance from other vehicles to allow for safe stopping. This is especially important in slippery conditions
Use Turn Signals: Always signal when changing lanes or turning to communicate your intentions clearly to other drivers.
Obey Speed Limits: Adhere to posted speed limits to ensure a safe environment for yourself and others on the road.
Your attention to these fundamentals really makes a difference, contributing to a safer environment for everyone on the road.
Let’s Stay Safe Together.
As we embrace the changing weather, let’s prioritize safety and support each other on our roadways. At ODOT, safety is our foremost commitment. Let’s work together to ensure a secure environment for everyone.
