Future phases: additional third lane

The project will add a third lane in each direction on the seven-mile stretch of I-205 between Stafford Road and OR 99E and add a northbound auxiliary lane between OR 99E and OR 213.

The new auxiliary lane will accommodate vehicles entering and exiting I-205 from OR 99E and OR 213.

How auxiliary lanes work 

An ODOT study found auxiliary lanes are an effective way to improve safety and reduce bottleneck congestion. An auxiliary lane, also called a ramp-to-ramp lane, typically provides a direct connection from one interchange ramp to the next. Vehicles can transition from one ramp to the next without having to merge into through traffic. This improves overall safety and operations of the highway. 

Widening I-205 requires removing part of the rock slope on the northbound side of I-205 between the Sunset Avenue overcrossing and the OR 43 interchange. This rock work will result in construction impacts during a future phase of the project.
