Abernethy Bridge

The Abernethy Bridge will receive an additional lane in each direction and improvements to make it earthquake-ready.

Abernethy Other Bridge Improvements

Improvements will strengthen the Abernethy Bridge to withstand a major earthquake and help improve congestion by adding a third travel lane. Once complete, the bridge will be the first earthquake-ready interstate structure across the Willamette River and will have three travel lanes in each direction plus one auxiliary lane for people entering and exiting I-205.

Construction Process

1. Construct new bridge foundations, widen each side. Slide one direction. Existing lanes will remain open to traffic during this time. (Phase 1A)

2. Slide the other direction. Existing lanes will remain open to traffic during this time.
(Phase 1A)

3. Complete remaining bridge widening toward the center to join the bridges together and remove existing supports. Existing travel lanes will remain open to traffic. (Phase 1A)

4. Striping for the final lane configuration. This work will occur by the end of Phase 1D.
